Title: Manifold analysis of hydrological data (水文資料之流形分析)


Fundamental and commonly-used temporal and spatial analysis methods, such as principal component analysis, nearest neighbor analysis, kriging method, etc., are based on linear Euclidean coordinates. This research aims to construct a topological manifold, possibly low dimensional, which embeds climate data of Pacific islands. The climate system is complex and problematic to predict. Climate may be affected by ocean currents, atmosphere, or solar radiation. It has been revealed that connectedness in temporal and spatial dimensions may play an important role, which may not be suitably measured by Euclidean distance. Comparing to traditional data analysis methods, the pros and cons of topological data analysis in climate datasets will be discussed and addressed.
