Climate smart adaptation for a resilient community - storm water management using Low Impact Development (LID) measures


This study develops and applies the methodologies to help decrease the impact caused by extreme precipitation under climate change at a community scale, through managing the quantity of storm water. This study integrates the developed methodologies into the climate adaptation procedure, the climate-smart adaptation procedure. The focuses of the study are future design storms, spatial optimization model for planning of the Low Impact Development (LID) measures, and adaptation pathway analysis. The methodologies are applied to a community to demonstrate their applicability and the overflow of the drainage system is simulated using the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The results show the possible changes of the design storms, the optimal layouts of LID measures, and the expected losses of implementing different storm water management pathways, which are found useful in increasing the resilience of a community facing the impact of future extreme storm events, as well as in showing the value of climate-smart: doing the right things at the right time.
