Title: Sudden Intensification of Typhoon Hato (2017) before Landfalling on Macau

Abstract:

Typhoon Hato (2017) experienced a sudden intensification to a category-3 intense typhoon just before making landfall on Macau on 23 August 2017. The unexpected strong wind of 51.4 m s-1 severely damaged the city in an unprecedented level, killing 10 people and causing over US$ 1 billion of economic losses. In fact, Hato was the worst typhoon to hit Macau in the past 50 years. Based on satellite observations, atmospheric reanalyses and model simulations, it is found that the unique thermal condition of the coastal water near Macau is likely responsible for Hato’s sudden intensification. Meanwhile, the atmosphere also appeared to provide a favorable environment. If this result is indeed the general case, it would be a very worrisome situation to coastal areas, such as the southern coast of China. Due to the unique ocean thermal condition, the landfalling typhoons may continue to intensify until the last minute, increasing the challenge in typhoon intensity prediction and posing huge threat to the people living in those areas.
